To install a free WordPress theme, go to Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme, find the theme you want, then click Install → Activate.
If you downloaded a theme as a ZIP file, go to the same screen and choose Upload Theme instead.
One useful thing to know: installing a theme does not make it live right away. Your site’s design only changes when you click Activate.
If you are changing the theme on an existing site, I recommend making a backup before you activate anything new. You can follow our guide on how to back up WordPress before changing themes.
How to install a free WordPress theme
If the theme is available in the official WordPress Theme Directory, install it directly from your dashboard. This is the method I recommend for most beginners.
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Appearance → Themes.
- Click Add New Theme.
- Search for the theme you want.
- Click Install.
- When the installation finishes, click Activate.
You can also browse the available themes if you have not picked one yet. WordPress lets you view popular and recently added themes or filter them by features.
If you need help choosing one, see our guide to the best free WordPress themes.
After activation, open your homepage in a new tab and check that the new theme is showing correctly.
There is no need to download a theme manually if the same theme is already available through the WordPress dashboard.
How to upload a WordPress theme ZIP file
Use this method if you bought or downloaded a theme from a developer, marketplace, or another website.
You should have a .zip file on your computer. Do not unzip it before uploading it to WordPress.
Then:
- Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme.
- Click Upload Theme.
- Click Choose File.
- Select the theme ZIP file.
- Click Install Now.
- Click Activate when the installation finishes.
If WordPress accepts the file, that is all you need to do.
Some theme sellers give you a larger download package that contains the theme along with documentation, plugins, license files, or other folders. If the file will not install, check that you are uploading the actual theme ZIP rather than the full package you downloaded.
If WordPress won’t install the theme
One of the most common errors is:
The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.
This usually means WordPress cannot find a valid theme in the ZIP file you uploaded.
Check the download on your computer. If you received a larger package, open it and look for another ZIP file containing the actual WordPress theme. Upload that file instead.
Also make sure you are not trying to upload a plugin from the Themes screen. Plugins should be installed from Plugins → Add Plugin.
If the theme installs but your site looks wrong afterward, see our guide on how to fix a WordPress theme that is not displaying correctly.
What if the theme ZIP is too large?
Your hosting provider may limit the size of files you can upload through WordPress.
If that happens, you can upload the theme manually with your host’s file manager or an SFTP client such as FileZilla.
Extract the theme ZIP on your computer, then upload the theme folder to:
/wp-content/themes/
Go back to Appearance → Themes, find the theme, and click Activate.
I would only use this method when the normal WordPress uploader does not work. The dashboard method is easier for most people.
What to do after installing a WordPress theme
Start by opening your website and checking the homepage, menu, blog posts, and any important pages.
Do not worry if the site does not immediately look exactly like the theme demo. Many demos use their own images, menus, page layouts, and sample content.
Some themes also come with starter sites or demo imports. If your theme has one, you will usually find it in the theme settings or its documentation.
Next, check where your theme’s design settings are located.
For a classic theme, you may see:
Appearance → Customize
For a block theme, go to:
Appearance → Editor
Block themes use the Site Editor, so not seeing Customize does not mean something is missing.
Before you finish, open the site on your phone too. Check that the menu opens properly, text is easy to read, buttons are easy to tap, and nothing runs off the side of the screen.
Will installing a new WordPress theme delete my content?
No. Installing or activating a new theme does not delete your posts, pages, or uploaded media.
Your theme controls how that content is displayed.
After switching themes, you may need to adjust things such as menu locations, widgets, homepage settings, or features that were tied to your previous theme.
This matters more on an established site than on a fresh WordPress install, which is why I recommend creating a backup before changing the active theme.
Once the new theme is working correctly, you can start changing the design. See our guide on how to customize a free WordPress theme without coding.
